Creating the future we want

The Island Community Data Portal is a digital platform providing user-friendly access to a wide array of data about the communities of Unama’kik (Cape Breton Island).

Its purpose is to strengthen understanding about local concerns so that we can better shape the community we want for ourselves and future generations.

Our goal is to engage all those interested in building an inclusive, equitable, and sustainable Unama’kik in dialogue and action for a vibrant, healthy community.

On the portal you will find:

  • Social, economic, and environmental data on a wide range of themes important to community wellbeing.
  • Stories and analysis that help bring that data to life.
  • Opportunities to participate in community conversations to explore these issues more fully and shape agendas for action.
  • Reports, studies, and other resources for people wanting to examine the issues in more detail.

Join the process

The data portal is intended to grow and develop over time. We welcome your input and suggestions as we learn together to create the future we want for our island.

“To love a people deeply is to seek to understand the origins of their limitations and, in doing so, crack open compassion for the ways in which they will inevitably fail one another. It is also to know what they are capable of, their potential, and the different kind of future — one with far less suffering — within their reach, and to then walk beside and behind them on that long and winding road.” –Erika Shea, from the forward to The Search For A New Way: The Story of New Dawn Enterprises, by Rankin MacSween
